Multilingual SEO for Shopify: A Practical Guide
How to do multilingual SEO on Shopify the right way: URL structure, hreflang, translated SEO fields, and the mistakes that cost international stores their rankings.
Going international is one of the highest-leverage moves a Shopify store can make — but only if search engines understand your new pages. Multilingual SEO is the difference between a translated store that ranks and one that quietly duplicates itself into oblivion.
This guide covers the mechanics that matter on Shopify: URL structure, hreflang, and the fields most stores forget to translate.
1. Get the URL structure right
Google supports two common structures for international Shopify stores:
| Structure | Example | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Subdirectories | store.com/de/products/x | Most stores — shares domain authority |
| Subdomains | de.store.com/products/x | Regional teams or separate inventories |
Subdirectories are almost always the right default: every new language inherits your existing domain authority instead of starting from zero.
2. Hreflang is non-negotiable
hreflang tells Google which page version to serve a German or Japanese searcher. Without
it, Google treats your language versions as duplicate content and picks one to rank —
usually the wrong one.
Two rules keep hreflang healthy:
- Every translated page must link back to every other language version, including itself.
- Always include an
x-defaultfallback for visitors with no language match.
3. Translate the SEO fields, not just the page
The most common failure mode: beautiful translated product pages whose titles, meta descriptions, alt texts and URL slugs are still in English. Google ranks pages partly on those fields — leave them untranslated and you rank as if you never translated at all.
4. Avoid the thin-content trap
Auto-translating thousands of thin pages "because we can" dilutes your crawl budget and invites the low-quality flag. Ship fewer, high-quality pages first — your best sellers and category pages — then expand based on search data.
How to implement this without a team
Doing all of this manually across dozens of locales is exactly what automation is for. The AI Translate app translates every field including SEO titles, descriptions and alt text, keeps your hreflang structure intact, and verifies each write before it lands. See how pricing scales — and if you are still evaluating tools, our translation app comparison walks through the checklist.
